How Much BJJ Should You Train To Get Better?
How much BJJ should I train every week? Your coach says Everyday. The Pro guys train twice a day! But how much is right for you? JT likes to take things to the extreme and Joey has a more moderate approach and through their experience helping thousands of BJJ folks get stronger, more flexible and get healthy- they have discovered the sweet spot. Now winning in terms of how much you train looks different depending on your Jiu-Jitsu goals: If you are a top competitor, an experienced hobbyist or a frothy white belt. The boys discuss what each goal might require and some approaches you can take to ensure you don't crash and burn. More does not always equal better.
There can be some diminishing...

I’ve only been doing bjj for about a year and it’s the first sport I take seriously, so take it with a grain of salt, but I also lost around 30kg and gained a lot of muscle, 10x my performance and I got to 4 stripes in about a year, and I train martial arts almost 2x a day 5-6 days a week so I think I maybe got some stuff right: Basically do progressive overload with functional overreaching in monthly periods, organize your week to have some days for technique and some days for competitiveness, do deloads, add hourly sessions once a month or two months, you only deload if you can’t sleep or eat or you feel restless from too much overtraining (no longer functional), if your training partners or coach don’t remember or know your training regiment too bad, you gotta swallow that ego and tap or go at a slower pace and tell your coach you have planned periodization and today you’re tired or it’s a day you’re not supposed to train too hard, a good coach will let you do that and even give advice on how to do it The biggest part is making it a habit, humans are creatures of habit, to me waking up to train at 7 am fasted is normal, I don’t feel tired or weak, it’s not a matter of willpower once you get used to it, in fact I feel weak and tired if I rest too much

Great content as always my friends, i wish i have received this kind of knowledge in my beginning, I'm a four strips purple bel but until i get my purple belt i trained abou 5 x- 6x times a week and nowadays i try to do at maximum 4x times a week with 2x weightlifting sessions and mobility every day (usually i train 3x times a week), in my opinion its better for regular people try to be consistent instead mimic the routine of the some athletes Abraços do Brasil meus amigos

30 years old blue belt , I do train 3 times a week 2hr sessions, 1 hr drills/tech 1 hr of rolling . If I miss class for some reason I’ll do open mat instead , and it’s working for me greatly. Also every couple months I’ll do competitions, what I think gives me a lot of improvement. Consistency is a key. Love the podcast

My old coach was the master questioning why i missed sessions etc, I was not a huge fan of that vibe. My new coach doesnt care when you show up, if you come late, if you need to sitout rolls. Infact he encourages me to train less and recover. We still train hard and do more rounds than most gyms but there's never a day i dont feel like training. So much more sustainable and enjoyable....

At 36, things are different. I was in n a bad motorcycle wreck, so that definitely affected things but when I was 28 I did 3 classes/day, 6 days/week, plus weights, sauna, and gymnastics 5 days a week and traveled with a band on weekends. I never did a tournament on less than 30 hours of no sleep and I never got injured At Dallas Open, I had to play a gig until 2 am in Abilene, then drive 6 hrs straight to be on the the mat at 9 am and I won gi and no gi. Now at 36, 3 weeks into starting BJJ and muay Thai again, I haven’t been able to train more than two days and I’ve been injured for a whole week now 😂

Pertaining to the drugs for injuries: Stay away from that crap. Very few people have had injuries anything like mine and tho it sucked, I didn’t take any pain medication. That stuff wrecks you. Seen it so many times. Btw: in a motocross wreck I broke my left arm in 18 places, left femur, right wrist, 3 ribs, both ankles, back, collarbone, etc BJJ injuries are nothing compared to motocross. Just accept it and be stronger mentally than your body.

My advice to white belts: survival, defense, survival, defense, survival defense. But learn to attack from defensive positions. That makes people bail on whatever dominant position they have. I didnt even try to submit ANYONE first year. If I caught another blue or white, I let it go. I gave up position INTENTIONALLY, EVERY time. Within a few months, even the purple belts hated rolling with me because they couldn’t tap me. Granted I couldn’t get them but that wasn’t my goal. I started competing 3 months in and I literally had refs and coaches talking shit to me and accusing me of sandbagging. I competed at blue belt as a white and same thing. My defense frustrated everyone so much that they would basically quit and I would submit them almost immediately with same two moves. Took 10 years off, came back at 36 and everyone in the gym hates rolling with me, because I’m technically a white but can survive and sometimes tap purple belts who actively compete. I suck but my defense is solid and that goes a long way. Just put ego aside.

I think they are good to have but the best set-up is having multiple mat enforcers, at various skill levels, aggression, etc. I’ve seen a few but my fave was at a gym, we had a “D1” wrestler as a “guest.” Owner is a retired mma fighter (ufc, pride) and though he rarely was at the BJJ classes he brought this guy in one day and gave a 20 minute lecture, pre class on how much of a freak this kid was and how we could all learn from him. Anyway, my professor gave me the nod and paired us up first roll. I was a white belt but trained like a banshee. This kid told me how screwed I was and what I was in for. Ya, that guy. Anyway, it was my first experience with that level of ego but I tapped him at least 20 times in 5 minutes. He was not stoked. Next he goes with our world champion purple belt enforcer who barely spoke English and the kid did the same smack talking! It was almost criminal what happened to him. That was his last roll and we never saw him again 😂

Feeling yea bro. Played ultimate frisbee twice a week apart and knee swelled up a lot. Didn’t feel anything tear etc so weird. Think my outside meniscus has wear and tear. Missed 3 weeks of BJJ and only coming back slowly. Just have to go easy and not use flexibility only frames. Sucks bad. Takes a few months to heal. I did the research and surgery doesn’t do much.
